What do you string a Stradivarius with?

Or any other expensive violin.

I was reading an article about the musician who fell down the stairs and smashed his $1 mil violin, which made me wonder what you string such expensive violins with.

What do you string a Stradivarius with?headache

Yes, I read the same article the other night. Makes you wonder what a flimsy sort of case he was using at the time ? Yes, it was in a case.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7244...

I was trying to find out about the strings the other day but I could not find too much information

Anne Sophie Mutter owns two Strads and here she appears to be endorsing Dominants.

http://www.thomastik-infeld.com/johcgi/t...

I do know that some other violinists who have very expensive instruments (Stradivarius and Guarnerius ) use Dominants.

Hilary Hahn uses Dominants on her Viullaume violin...except for the E string, of course.

http://www.thomastik-infeld.com/johcgi/t...

I would have thought there would be more information about this subject, especially forn the string maufactureres them selves eg "Itzhak Perlman uses our brand of strings etc. "

Most of these old violins have had their necks replaced so that they can be strung with higher tension steel strings.

http://beginningpreservation.blogspot.co...

PS Found it

http://www.violinist.com/discussion/resp...

The list shows that many of them use Dominants : Vengerov, Perlman, Shaham,Midori, Zukerman. ; they usually replace the E string with something better.

And this list shows that many of them either play Strads or a Guarneri (del Gesu)

What's that one classical song that's with strings and starts quiet and slowly grows loude

It starts out quiet with one violin, and slowly grows to add one more violin, then another, and grows louder. Or at least I think its violins -- could be some other type of strings. It kind of builds on layers in the starting. Its really pretty and fairly wide known. You'd probably find it on any classical radio station. I have no idea who the composer is or anything. I just can't for the life of me figure out what the song is. Can someone help?

I bet you're thinking of Pachelbel's Canon in D. If it is, you're right; it's very well known and you'll be able to find a recording with ease. If you can't find a recording, I can hook you up.

Must be Ravel's "Bolero" you are refering to. Became popular when it was featured in the movie "10" starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.
The Blue Danube by Strauss? It's a waltz.
Its called Ravell's Bollero

Should I sell or should I keep my instruments?

Should I sell my violin and guitar?

I used to play all my instruments nearly every day. I play 7 instruments and lately I just don't have the time to play them or take care of them. It's not that I don't have the time to play, when I have the time to play I just never want to play. I'd rather listen to music or just lay down and take a breather. I'll never sell my piano--even though I don't play it like I used to, I just love having that one around. I already sold my clarinet--at first I could have cared less and was all "yay I got $700!" Now I miss my clarinet and wish I never would have sold it. (Then again, I played it for 10 years so of course I'd miss it. Like the piano, I've played it now for 17 years.)

I want to sell my guitar and violin. But I'm not sure if I should. I've only had my violin for just about a year now and the guitar for 2. As much as I want to learn to play them I just can't find the time. I don't want them to sit around and collect dust.

Should I sell or should I keep my instruments?binoculars

Keep them. You will regret it later.

I was a music major in college. After graduating I wanted nothing to do with music and I put my clarinet away! After 4-5 years of not playing I thought it would be fun to play in a community group and played in a couple. I would have regretted selling it. You'll never know where you will be a few years from now.

Also, each instrument is an individual and cannot be replaced. I love playing on my clarinet and have a hard time playing other clarinets because of those differences.

Should I sell or should I keep my instruments?violin opera theater

I'd say hang on to them. Even if you don't play them that often, you've already absorbed the cost of buying them. Playing from time to time is better than getting the immediate cash but then just spending it on something else. At least right now you have something tangible to show for your hard earned cash.
believe me,nobody can tell you but yourself
You should not sell them, I would keep them and see if you have any family members that would like to learn to play these. If that's not the idea you had, sell the guitar, what kind of guitar is it? Maybe I'd like to buy it. I still would sell the violin, it's good money. Put it into guitar lessons.

Does anyone have a good solo suggestion?

Hi, I've been a violin student for 8 years going into my 9th and I need a good solo violin piece with an orchestra accompanyment. I have a good amount of time to work on the piece because the concert is in May. But I need to start right away to get it polished. My level I think is pretty high, I sit fourth chair in first violins of my middle school's advance orchestra. I've also made region orchestra before. I need a good piece that will sound great and some people say that I would do good with a romantic period piece but any suggestions you have I will consider. Please, I need suggestions.

I highly doubt he or his orchestra could handle the Sibelius Concerto....

If I were you I would search websites like sharmusic.com , swstrings.com and sheetmusic.com for Violin Concertos. Many of them you can look through atleast the first page and then assess whether or not you would be able to play it. Also youtube.com will allow you to hear a concerto you are interested in, so that would be my advise.

1.okay, I know it has been done to death but Meditation from Thais by Massenet is VERY popular. Remember that many members of the audience may not have ever heard it before and many others would not have heard it played live.

2.also, any of the first or third movements from the great violin concertos

3.Zigeunerweisen/Gypsy Airs by Sarasate

That is a few suggestions
something by vivladi, i;m in orchestra too, 2nd violin but the leader does this massive solo during the whole 3 movements...and his solos (without anyone else playing) go for like 5-10 minutes

on the sheet music it doesn't have the exact opus and everything but it is by vivaldi and it;s in 3 movements...it sounds kinda rustic

Another vote for....

Yo dej茅 de tocar el viol铆n.

.
neither
Ya no toco al violin.
You should write- yo dej茅 de tocar el viol铆n.
Even though the literal translation would be

Yo par茅 de tocar el viol铆n.

That is not the way to say it.

You should say: Yo dej茅 de tocar el viol铆n. (with an accent)
Tocando (I'm pretty sure) becaure tocar is the infinitive, meaning "to... whatever." And yes, online translators do nothing for grammar. (But it might work if you word it differently.) Is this multiple choice? If it's not, it might not be either of those...
yo pare DE tocar el violin

parar DE

is to stop doing something

parar in that context is usually accompanied with the preposition de

(i also told him that i hardly lie and if i do lie it will most likely be about who i like. today (november 2) him and i didnt talk at all except for during orchestra when i was practacing a song i played a g sharp and he walked up behind me and said "its a g natrual" as in i made a mistake in my playing. then a little later during orcehstra after he got his violin and unpacked it he came up to me and gave me a high five for no reason. and also today i cought him staring at me a little bit during orchestra and then in the hallway right after 6th hour (period whatever u want to call it). and i heard him make alot of mistakes in his playing (violin) wich i have never even heard him make a total of 10 mistakes before even with new music it seemes like he is destracted should i ask him about it or just ignore it but i think that i am breaking up our friendship and i think i shouldnt of told him that i like him. today his freind (him and one of his other freinds are stand partners) had to say his name 5 times to get his attention and usually it is really easy to get alex's attention unless he is talking to me (he hates it when somone interups him and i talking but doesnt seem to mind if somone interups when him and somone other than me are talking) even when he is practicing his violin it is easy to get his attention i am sorta worried about him he has seemed depressed for the last cuple of days.

Type of music for college entrance?

Hi, I would like to know a good piece for a solo piece on the violin that I can use to show my talent on the violin for college entrance. Which music would be appropriate and will show my talents on the violin? I am capable of playing most of the music.

Type of music for college entrance?home theatre

Most music schools actually list what sorts of pieces they want to hear, right on their web pages. They tend to have certain preferences in terms of style and type, so it pays for you to go to their websites and check that out. It may vary by school, as well, so you may need more than one piece, depending. Some schools are pretty broad in their recommendations, but others are fairly specific. Check the web pages, re: auditions, for each of the schools you are considering.

Also, talk to your violin teacher now and see, based on what the schools want, what she recommends. Go to her with some ideas yourself, and see if you can find a piece that will give the schools what they want, and also show you in the best possible light.

Good luck!

Type of music for college entrance?ballet theater opera theater

Depends on what college. I'm assuming this is for an undergraduate degree? Often they want something like the following:

1. All major and minor scales %26amp; arpeggios;

2. Kreutzer etude, Dont Op. 37 etudes (Op. 35 would be better);

3. First movement of a concerto, Mozart might be okay, Barber would be better. The whole concerto would be better -- the whole concerto from memory better still.

4. Maybe a sonata, Brahms or Beethoven.

Often they will ask for a repertoire list, so it's a good idea to have a hard copy (paper copy) of all the works you're looked at with your teacher, both etudes, scale books and pieces.

Good luck!
i don't know much abt it

but i think u shd select something which shows ur ability, passion and select something u like very much
Symphonie Espanole by Lalo is a good show piece.

Bach E-major concerto (first movement).

The Franck Sonata or Beethoven's Spring Sonata is fine but you better have one heckuva accompanist.

If those are too hard try the middle movement of the Tschaikovsky or "Meditation" from Thais by Massanet.

Cultural Revolution?

Did the Cultural Revolution in China in the 60s, 70s and 80s have anything to do with destroying non-chinese items (such as violins)? Im doing a paper on "the red violin" movie and I was wondering why the violin was nearly destroyed while in China. Yes,I do know this was a fictional movie, but was that whole ordeal in china an actual thing that happend in history? Details please

Cultural Revolution?globe theater

The CR started in Oct, 1966 and ended in Oct, 1976. Indeed, The CR was threatening China for ten years. In the beginning, destructive groups such as Red Guards and The CR Authority grasped the power, and China drove into the severe confusion. But passing the time, the people got to doubt the CR. And finally, ten-year tragedy came to an end in 1976.

The CR had a great impact on a lot of the peole and each field like economy. Especially, a great number of students were used as Red Guards, and they lost their own time. And the CR had impact on the other countries.

In the early of 1980s, the CR was formally considered as wrong and Gang of Four was judged on trial. During the CR, the number of the people who were persecuted to death were uncountable, and the damage on the mind of the Chinese is beyond words.

Red Guards attacked all traditional values (religions, chinese rites, all things cultural- chinese operas, plays, etc) and "bourgeois" things (western stuff, like violins, piano, western books, paintings, etc) and to test party officials by publicly criticizing them. The movement quickly escalated; many elderly people and intellectuals were not only verbally attacked but were physically abused. Many died. The Red Guards splintered into zealous rival factions, each purporting to be the true representative of Maoist thought. Mao's own personality cult, encouraged so as to provide momentum to the movement, assumed religious proportions. The

resulting anarchy, terror, and paralysis completely disrupted the urban economy. Industrial production for 1968 dipped 12 percent below that of 1966.

*** the leader for the gang of four' is jiang qing, wife of chairman mao's. the communist government is quick to alienate chairman mao's hand in the CR, as he is highly revered in china.

Cultural Revolution?oper opera theater

OMG, the cultural revolution back in 60's was a dreadful and hideous event orchestrated by this mass-murderer Mao Tzedong. It was not only a matter of destroying non-chinese items, rather a fiendish will to destroy ALL culture in China, and bringing proud and decent Chineses to being kneeled down to slavery. You might allow yourself a wry smile at the fuss created by hanging Saddam, when Mao died quietly in his bed having commited crimes orders of magnitude way above Saddam's.

Is this story below good , interesting, grade level and are there any mistakes?

Far back in time even before the dinosaurs in Europe, there lived a blacksmith only three feet tall. Sam, the three ft tall blacksmith benevolent and was very beautiful even if he was small. He was short that he needed a stool to stand on to shoe the great steeds of the knights! Even though he is not smaller than a dog that lived in the empire, he was nicer than anyone was. This bothered him not a bit, because although he was small he was very brave. In fact, in his heart he secretly longed to become a knight and win the hand of the Princess.

The Princess was the King and Queen's only child and it should come as no surprise that the little blacksmith loved her very much for she was both kind and beautiful. Her name was princess Bell and it was named after her grandma Bell. She was even smaller than the black smith was! The princess had dancing eyes and long silken hair like Rapunzel, which she wore in a coiled braid. He parents went many doctors but there was not anything that cured her. Why did the blacksmith and princess have this? Nevertheless, alas, the little blacksmith could admire the Princess only from afar because she was, after all, a princess and he but a lowly blacksmith not even that tall. He would wake up everyday, look at one of the old dusty pictures of Bell, and then go to a small window. Even though he could not see, he managed to make a stool out of some old steel and brown wood to see.

One sunny day a terrible dragon came to the kingdom. Breathing fire on anyone who crossed its path, it trampled houses and burned fields. Many knights battled the dragon but their swords could not cut its thick dark brown scales. Each night it flew home to its cave in the mountains surrounded by a deep ravine.

The dragon was enchanted and protected by a magic spell. It said,

He who would break my spell,

Must know the ones I think in my head,

Then tell the bridge if it is what he thought and play the violins like Beethoven could,

If he wants still can finish my obstacles, he would challenge me on chess.

Last, not least, write me a story on a piece of rock that is no longer or less than eight pages in 18 min!

If you finish these, then you will challenge me writing quickly or using my new but old typing machine. Tell me why you came here that have to exactly no more or less than two pages.

Many scientists and mathematicians went to challenge and many were defeated as the dragon moved closer and closer to the laboratory. These scientists were like a magician with great brains. The King was insulted, his face turned to red with a rage, and he almost looked like a cherry on top of a white vanilla ice cream! He declared whosoever won against the dragon would be granted half of his laboratory. Now scientists and mathematicians came from across the sea. They were the most intelligence, the oldest, and the biggest mathematicians anyone had ever seen. These were from many cultures and had different type of answers that they may think that the dragon was thinking. A thousand of them gathered to challenge the dragon. However, with his great mind the dragon took no time in defeating fifty mathematicians from their places and breathing fire on the rest. He said,

You must think I am here to fiddle,

Thousand men is not the riddle.

One man alone, only one man,

With great intelligence,

That is the plan.

In desperation, the King proclaimed whosoever solved the riddles and defeated dragon granted would be their heart's desire.

Now the merchants got busier than ever. Suddenly there were books everywhere: fat books, skinny books, sharp books, and chess books, people books, violin books, but mostly tiny books so that one man might carry many of them. However, a tiny book is more like a dagger and most scientists and mathematicians were too proud to carry a sack full of books. There were violins, and many other things that were not even needed. There was also a need for paper and pencils to write out the problems, all kinds, and shapes of papers and pencil and pens and boards. They needed even rock like miniature rocks, sharp rocks, and many color rocks. Of course, with all this material they needed carts to carry it and animals to pull it so there was a run on wagons and horses and donkeys and oxen.

Lastly, they sold glasses to the old people. They sold crystal goblets, wooden goblets, big cups, little cups, coffee cups, fat cups, skinny cups to drink. To fill these cups the wine merchants and the milkmaids sold red wine, white wine, sparkling wine, cow's milk, goat's milk and all types of fruit juice. There were maids who drank in gulps to show that they should buy it.

In fact, the kingdom had never known such commercial success. Nothing was left of anything resembling papers or pencil material, or a wagon to hold it, or an animal to pull it, and there was not a drop of liquid left in all the kingdom but ordinary water.

The things that left were sacks and sacks and sacks of money piled everywhere. Moreover, did this do any good? No. The mathematicians for all their effort and all their supplies could not defeat the dragon and now the countryside strewn was with debris and the empire was a mess. Only the little scientist’s heart was full of hope for he finally had a chance to win the hand of the Princess. He fashioned a lab coat and a book out of old paper and pencils, mounted his pony, and rode to court. Bowing before the King, he said, "I wish to be mathematician so that I may rid your kingdom of this horrible monster."

There was a moment of silence, then everyone but the Princess began to laugh. In fact, they laughed and they laughed, which made the Sam’s ears turn red. They nearly died laughing. The King said, "You are no match for this dragon. It takes might to defeat. You are simply too small."

The little scientists squared his shoulders. "I may be slight but I can think."

The Princess was impressed than anyone. She was thinking that this man was brave than anyone she knew. It was clear to her he was brave and good. "Father, for my sake, sends him this day. You promised 'whosoever should defeat the dragon,' and surely he deserves a chance." The King could not refuse his only daughter. He rose from his throne and sent the scientist. Then, for luck, the Princess unwound her long braid, pulled out a single hair, and handed it to the Sam. He placed it in a pocket over his heart. "May you have good fortune, my brave scientist," she said.

Sam was filled with happiness to the way the princess acted. Sam gulped and he set out on his pony to find the dragon. The pony was white and was faster than a Cheetah. His coat swished and there were tigers that were roaring stopped. He met many tired and defeated scientists and one helpful fellow told him, "Go back one man can't do these bizarre obstacles, nor can you beat him at the chess.

Sam thought what a dragon would think out the story his mom told when he was a kid. They only think about the little small cute kids. The dragon thought the littlest scientist was the biggest fool. The littlest scientist has been traveling half a day when he came upon an object in the road beneath a tree. A beehive was yellow and was right next to beautiful flower. Being a kind soul, he picked it up to put it back in the tree. Suddenly he heard a tiny, buzzing voice.

We see you have kind intentions,

However, please do not put us back.

Every scientist who has seen us here,

He raised his tiny sword that was smaller than a toy and gave a whack.

Carry us elsewhere, we pray,

In addition, we will return the favor one day.

"OK," said the littlest knight and carefully tied the beehive to his saddle that was black and gray.

It was shortly after that, he found the dragon or rather it found him. It landed nearby to look him over, and said,

Pfft, why you are nothing but a pea,

Who does not reach my knee?

Go home and grow some more.

Challenging you would be a bore.

"Ouch," said the dragon. The littlest scientist charged and struck him again. The dragon roared.

Dragon sat on his chair and said, “Do all the work that is over there” as fast as the littlest scientist could run he did all the work in the time he had. He was typing everything he knew even the dragon’s thoughts. The dragon was amazed what three ft tall person could do and skipped the chess.

“You are so right,” said the dragon after he saw this tiny man do the; I shall be your dragon until the day I die. The littlest scientist sat on the dragon with the beehive and his pony and went back to the kingdom, when the king saw the littlest scientist with the dragon he was amazed and asked him to wed his daughter. Then Sam was the king after Bell’s father died. He went to many cruel wars and as one of his future advisors had said in a sad voice that one of his own beloved children that would be born by Bell would kill you.

This is a very nice short story! The little poetic riddle is very nice. I don't know what grade you are in, so I am going to assume the writing is about right for your class. The story needs some more proofreading, especially with regard to sentence structure, grammar (particularly subject-verb agreement) and punctuation. I suggest having someone else proofread it, too, because it is too familiar to you. Don't use abbreviations, such as "the three ft. tall blacksmith". A good job of proofreading could improve your grade by a couple of points. Good luck, and keep writing!

everything else was good tough
That depends what class are you writing for and what grade are you in?
Not interesting, too many errors, too many run on sentences, too much repetition. Probably about a 5Th grade reading level..Try making it simpler and easy to read.

For instance: In the first two sentences, we know that he is 3ft tall. You told us twice. It is established, leave it alone.

Dinosaurs are fun , but hardly relevant.

Go back, read it out loud then try to refine it. It has merit, but not in this form.
Wow this is super fantabulous! I would say for a low grade, like 5th or 6th. This is really good though, I think you should add on more and make it a chapter book!
It was great. If I were a teacher I would give you an A++.

There was no mistakes. I hope you get an A+ or a good

Grade. GOODLUCK!!

What music instrument should I learn?

I play piano and I like classical musics. Now I decided to learn another music instrument. It's a tough choice between violin and flute. I like violin but I'm afraid I'll hurt my fingers.

Besides violin and flute, do you have any good suggestions?

What instument do you think I should learn? Thanks!

What music instrument should I learn?paramount theater

Well, first of all, choose an instrument you are interested in and will stick with. I play violin, and I love it a lot, and it doesn't hurt your fingers. It's a very excellent instrument. If you like classical music, I'd say go for violin. It's very easy to learn and play, and very popular, too. Or you could do some other instrument.

If you like:

classical/pleasant, go for a string instrument

jazz, modern, go for saxophone or something

fanfare-ish/marhcing band, go for a brass instrument

rock, go for guitar or electric guitar

something gentle and nice, go for flute

OR if your decision is between high and low:

if you like high/moderately high sounds, go for violin, viola, flute, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone

if you like moderately low/low, go for cello, string bass, trombone, tuba, tenor saxophone, bass saxophone

If you're not sure or if you don't know what some of those intstruments are, research it a little, or if you want a different instrument but don't know what, research that too until you find out. A good thing to do is to decide what kind of sounds you like better: violin, flute, or something else. My obsessive love for violin music is what led me to choose violin.

Anyway, when you think you've made you decision, you should find out about the instrument, establish a budget for yourself, find instruments in the price range, and most importantly, find out if you can get lessons nearby. Many music stores give private lessons if you are interested.

After all that, buy your instrument and get playing!

What music instrument should I learn?theatre opera theater

Flute, I tried violin it's a lot harder than it seems. There is no way you can play it without being able to tell what note you are playing when you put your finger down. Violin also needs to be taken care of often. I haven't played mine for a month and it has a scratcy tone from old resin (stuff you put on your bow to make noise) left on the strings. I would think that flute is a semi-bad choice too, because some people have trouble playing certain wind instruments. The reason i play saxophone is because i couldn't play the trombone or tuba.
the HARP ~ it has 88 strings %26amp; a middle C %26amp; if you know how to read piano music it's the same,
French horn!!! The horn is an awesome instrument! I play the horn and it is absolutely wonderful! If you are looking for a challenging instrument that is a blast to learn and play, then then the French horn is the one for you. It is in treble clef, so you wouldn't have to learn different notes and brass instruments are really cool and fun to play! Good luck with whatever you choose to play!! :)
I play the flute and I love every minute of it! The flute is challenging to keep in tune while you are playing and uses a lot of air, so keep that in mind. The flute is often cheaper then a violin, as well.
Cello ?
The zylophone or bell lyre; both use the piano keyboard, but have distictively different sounds. The transition would be easy, with your background in piano.

My granddaughter is in Advanced Band and plays all 3 and the snare %26amp; bass drum.
piano
I played the flute for seven years and I regret dropping every time I hear a flute solo. It's not very difficult and incredibly beautiful.
Do you like chinese classical instrument? Well, i strongly suggest you take up one of those instrument to preserve chinese classical music which has rich musical heritage...for example

1) Yang-Qin or Chinese dulcimer

Yangqin is a Chinese hammered dulcimer with a near-squared soundboard. The instrument is very similar to Santur, played with two bamboo sticks.

or the more popular one in M'sia

2)Zheng or Guzheng - Chinese zither with movable bridges and 16 - 25 strings. In the same family there are the Japanese koto, the Vietnamese dan tranh, the Korean kayagum, and the Mongolian Yagta (more ... )

3)Erhu - or Er-Hu, a two-stringed fiddle, is one of the most popular Chinese instruments in the Hu-qin family, where Hu stands for "foreign" or "the northern folk" in Chinese, and "qin" is a general name for all kinds of string instruments. Also known as chinese violin...

I think there are few associations for chinese classical music in Pg...

I love classical music too but i did not learn, i have played guzhen before when i was living in my sis hse and the sound of the music is so dazzling, melodious and peaceful feelings.
Well, seen the fact that you are already 21, the violin might not be such a good idea. Appart from that, the beginning on a string instrument is more difficult than on a wind instrument like the flute. But there are an awful lot of people who play flute, so have you thought about clarinet or saxophone? If you want to play a string instrument, maybe the cello would be a bit more comfortable than the violin. Of course it all depends on what you would like yourself. After all the decision is yours.
You can play lots of other types of music on violin, not just classical. I have celtic, irish, gypsy, and disney movie music books to play for fun haha.
You have friends who are musicians, right? Go try their instruments until you find one that you just can't put down. Then go get yourself one. It's really that simple. You can do the same thing at a music store, but the salesperson is likely to talk you into buying something that he or she wants to sell, not necessarily what you want to buy. What instrument pricks up your ears when you listen to music? You already know that you are interested in two. Go try those. Violin doesn't hurt at all once you build up a little bit of callous on your fingertips and you do that by playing for five minutes and then ten minutes and then a little bit longer as your fingertips toughen up. You did the same thing with your feet when you learned to walk, honest. Violin isn't nearly as expensive as a flute if you get an entry level instrument starting out by the way. I have three in my classroom that cost less than two hundred dollars apiece and one that only cost me forty. (I wouldn't recommend that one, but if you forget your instrument, you get to play that one! (LOL)
If you're in for classical music, play the violin. If you're in for peaceful music, play the flute. If you like dreamland fantasy music, try the harp. If you prefer slow, mellow tones, then play the cello. Which ever you choose, it doesn't matter. All musical instruments are wonderful.

I myself play the flute. It fits my personality. My real name is Irina and it means 'peace'.

So. . .yeah.

Movie/history question?

In "The Red Violin", the violin was almost burned while in china, what was happening in china and why were they burning violins? What year was it? Did it really happen?

Movie/history question?opera ticket

John Corigliano's score to The Red Violin mirrors the intricate, mercurial quality of the film itself, as it traces the travels of a haunted violin from 17th century Italy to 20th century Montreal. The score is divided into five suites, one for each stage of the violin's creation and movement. From Italy to Vienna, Oxford to Shanghai, and finally to Montreal, the violin makes an eerie musical journey. Tracks like "Pope's Betrayal" and "Journey to China" are beautiful but hint at the red violin's quietly menacing quality. Performed by solo violinist Joshua Bell and the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Corigliano's Red Violin is a fitting, haunting counterpart to the picture. 1999

Why is my dad such a werido?

I am so embarrased to have a father like my dad. He is obsessed with violins big time. He likes violins more than his family. He never brought my mom a gift except one flower in his whole life.My dad is abuseive in more of a mental way such as calling the rest of my family "stupid" beacuse of his failures. He talks in a weird russian accent and talks about weird stuff like " if its a sleeping bear let it sleep" for fillings for teeth. and more ridiculous stuff ..When my mom screamed about him not buying her something for her anniversary he said "but i bought you a papaya" He has never bought a birthday present for me and the rest of my family. He is stubborn , loud, weird, dumb. He has the dumbest ideas like he is going to be the greatest scientist in the world and that he thinks that music created Adam and Eve. He has a madly obsession with classical music and violin sinse he was 8 btw he is 57 now. What is wrong with him.

Why is my dad such a werido?violin

edit 1...

Hi Wanda,

i'm sorry you are not getting on with your dad right now..

it's a very interesting question.. and hard to answer without knowing more about your dad.. but maybe i can help a little bit with some ideas..

I think that some people just find life very difficult to cope with.. some people find it impossible to do what is expected of them by the people around them, or to act in certain ways that are considered normal and decent behaviour..

It is possible that your dad finds all the stress and pressures of life too much for him to deal with in a way that is expected of him. Maybe the stress that he has experienced during his life (either during his childhood, or at the present time) has made him turn into himself (like a book closing).. it sounds like he is shutting out the outside world and has become self-absorbed and self-centred, only able to think about his hobby and himself.. because then he doesn't have to face up to all the stuff that he isn't able to do.. It is possible that your dad had a difficult or traumatic childhood which is affecting the way he copes with life now (maybe his parents weren't able to love and nurture him properly, so he doesn't know how to love and nurture his children properly?)

From what you say, it sounds like you dad lashes out at you and your family because he knows that he has failed at certain things, so he gets stressed, angry and frustrated with himself, but he focuses these emotions externally onto his family.

Possibly there are a few things that you could do to help the situation..

It would help you if you were able to talk to people who you can trust about your dad (it's a good start to post this question)..

If you can then talk to you mum about the situation and, if you have any and they are old enough to understand, then talk to your brothers or sisters..

Talk to any other family members, or friends, who you can trust..

Talking will definitely make things easier for you, and maybe help you to understand your dad.

If you can, try to see the positive things about your dad.. everyone has some positive things about them.. for instance, he hasn't run away from your family, he has stayed with you, so he probably loves you all very much, even if he isn't able to display this love as affection.

Maybe if your dad isn't able to do the things that he should for you and your family, then you could try to meet your dad at his level.. when it's quiet and you both have some time, then try spending some time with alone with your dad and ask him about his hobby and other things that he is interested in.. get to know him a little bit.. ask him about himself.. ask him what he enjoys in life.. ask him what dreams he has or used to have.. ask him why he never fullfilled his dreams.. ask him if he is happy.. ask him what his childhood was like.. you could also ask him why he gets angry, without being cross with him, so that he has a chance to think about his behaviour.

You might find that he opens up to you and that you actually start to like him again. He might surprise you if you give him the chance to.

He might not be able to totally change his behaviour for you, but you might be able to get to understand him a bit better and he might appreciate you taking an interest in him.. if you try to build a relationship with him, then you might find that he becomes a more pleasant and caring person.

I think that it's important to keep on asking questions.. whether it's to your dad, your family, other members of family, to friends or to anyone else that you feel you can trust.

I wish you lots of luck and happiness for the future,

Zag

Why is my dad such a werido?chinese theater opera theater

He may be abusive and forget the family and not get gifts. Those are concerns. His accent, his odd use of words and his love for the violin are endearing. Don't think that all outsiders will think he is terrible for how he talks. Young people might think it is strange, because they want their family to be just like everyone else's family. The thing is, we just are. Now, your dad may have a mental illness and might benefit from treatment, but don't worry about the violin, the words or his accent.
He sounds like he's suffering from delusions.. and delusions of grandeur. Could be schizophrenic.. could be bipolar with psychotic symptoms. There's not much to do to get him to want to get help if he doesn't want it. Try talking to him.. try talking to your mom. If not, just be patient with him and realize it's a chemical imbalance that he has. Also, try not to take it personally that he hasn't bought you a present (it doesn't like he has the functioning to remember its your birthday)... I know its sad and frustrating, but it sounds like its his illness not his personality thats the problem.

Also, it's slightly possible that there may be something wrong with his brain (he may need to see a neurologist).. sometimes that causes moodiness. Hope this helps.
Definately not wise.

He reminds me of a man I used to work with; this man told me his father was a B-man (B-specials was part of the police in Northern Ireland during the troubles in the 60s. He said the following five things about his father:

1) He said his father beat him with his baton for misbehaving, and this is how he has trouble keeping his voice down when talking to people, and why he takes fits of shouting things at people in the middle of the street.

2) He said his father fired teargas into the livingroom of the family home when the son (then aged 16) and some friends were throwing a party and they refused to let the father and mother in.

3) He said he got into a big fight at school, and his father and some other policemen stormed the school and baton charged all the boys out of the school and took them away in police vehicles, and they imprisoned them for three months.

4) He said his father was raiding a brothel in belfast and caught the mother and uncle at it in the brothel; he shot the uncle dead and disposed of his body and locked the mother in the police cell.

5) He said he bunked off school and his father locked him in the police cell for the whole of the summer holidays.

The man even said after he left school, he fought in Viet Nam. After Viet Nam, he said he joined the British Army, then joined the SAS, then worked as a Prison officer, then went to work in a caravan park.

One day there was a commotion outside a courthouse, and the man was driving past during his working hours, and he shouted "Hang them hang them" over at the crowd.

He even shouted "hello sexy" at an overweight middle-aged woman whose husband worked with us. This woman would have been seriously offened at this. He even said that she was in his house one night and left her underwear in his bedroom.
He sounds mentally ill (duh) like w/ schizophrenia or bipolar or personality disorder???? possibly a sociopath.

yikes!
Sounds like schizophrenia. My sister has it. (along with other family members that have passed) That's how bad it runs in my family. I'm not, I've got other problems, but I'm sane enough to know that what they do and say aren't right. All I can say is good luck. Its hard. Everything you say to him will be wrong. Go see a therapist, for yourself, not him.
I love my father even though we don't get a long. I'm sure you do too. My dad is even weirder. i am 26. Don't listen to these people here. Just because someone thinks for themselves and people don't understand them, doesn't make them ill. The labels they come up with for people who are different are just a quick fix. Your dad was once young, he thought about sex, wanting a happy future, money, house, food... Our life experiences lead us to who we are today and we also choose who we want to be. Leave the poor guy alone. Stop picking on him. People are different. You just need to learn his language. Chill.
i am sry u r a kid (i think) and u need ur dad more then ever but hes not there for u rite now.. try talking to ur mum about it and maybe seeing a theripist. i think r dad could have a serious problem just remember he loves u even if he doesnt show it.. if you know someone from his side of the family call them and ask them questions about him and how long he has been acting like this. if living with ur dad is to hard try living w ur grandma or a reletive... i know how hard it is to cope with something like this
that's my mom... only instead of violins it's singing OOPS! forgot to read all off your question! that is not my mom!
I am sorry for the answers I read before writing to you, please pay no attention to most of them, except the nice ones. Your father sounds like he grew up in Eastern Europe, have you ever asked him when he was born? (It is your birthright.) If he was born Russian, there could be a few reasons for his behavior. He might have had big dreams as a boy and was cruelly dissapointed for some reason, most likely poverty that is rampant in Eastern Europe, especially Russia and the former communist states. His tight-fistedness also speaks of a life of terrible poverty, but reality demands that the very real probability of mental illness be brought up too. I am not sure if you would be interested, but since I do a lot of reading and watching educational-type TV and have learned a lot about people and places, I strongly recommend for your own sake that you do the same. It would, at the very least give you some insight, and thereby, some understanding, about your father. The unfortunate truth about people who lived in terrible proverty and were deprived of even human kindness have the same problems you describe your father as having. I am sorry, but it seems very evident that your father is mentally ill and will probably never get help. For your own sake, you should go to your school or church and find help for YOU so you can get through life with your father with your own sanity intact. Remember that there is one person who cares about you, and do does God. Hang tough, don't let your father's problem become yours. Be the best you you can be, in spite of him. That is the best way to go. (Get good grades, get a good scholarship and get away as soon as you can.)
dont feel bad, my first husband treated me great until we got married then he did a complete turn around, he kept me from my friends and family. i wear a 3 1/2 shoe he got me a size 7pair and told me to put tissue in the toes and got mad when i refused to. he would not let me listen to country music and i love country. he would lock me in the bedroom at night. i had to explain every mininute where i was. 13 years of misry before he left me. your mom would be better off with out him
He's related to you.

Orchestra catching up!?

last moth, i decided that i wanted to play the violin, so i got a violin, and i decided to play in the orchestra. a lot of my friends have been playing since 4th grade. i am in 8th grade. i joined archestra a couple of weeks ago. everyone else there is a lot better than me, and since i just started it is very hard catching up. i am violin 2 last seat. how do i catch up with everyone else?

Orchestra catching up!?sunshine

Find a private teacher, and try practicing in the morning before school starts, if your teacher allows it. Basically, the key to improvement will be practice~

Orchestra catching up!?star theater opera theater

Like Brian and Vivaldi said, get a private tutor!! if you're really serious about playing violin, getting a good private tutor will be the best choice you ever made. You might pick up bad techniques in class because the conductor can't possibly pick up on everything anyone does wrong, especially in an 8th grade orchestra. In addition to getting a tutor, think about partnering up with one of the higher seconds outside of school. not only will you guys get practice time in, but you could end up making a new best friend =) and a little bit of extra advice, use rosin regularly. this will help you get a good sound out of your violin because it keeps your bow from sliding around as you play. and a shoulder rest! always use a shoulder rest!! other people might not use one, but it keeps your collar bone from hurting and (again) it'll help you get better sound. hope this helps!!
Get a private teacher. The violin is a very difficult instrument to play and it is NOT something you can teach yourself.

You will have to practise EVERY day for one hour ; no slacking off.

Here is a site that will help you. It is to be used in conjunction with a good teacher. You can click on the masterclasses and watch the videos :

http://violinmasterclass.com/mc_menu.php

TIPS : get an electronic tuner so that your violin is always in tune. They cost about $20 from the music shop.

Practise your long bow strokes every day ; bow all the way from the frog to the tip and listen to the sound you make. It should be one consistent tone.

Get a private teacher....this is so very important.

How can I read music better ?musicals

coming from a music major (although not a violinist), the only way to become good at anything, especially an instrument is just to practice your butt off. Also, you could try and find a private lesson teacher. Set goals for your progress. For example: Learning how to play a specific portion of a peice or etc. by the end of the week.

that's the best advice i got for you. : )

Does the violins sound improve with age(mine is an inexpensive chinese made)?

General rule, yes. The wood, laquer, glues etc. sort of meld together so the instrument resonates better over time.

Made in china? Not sure what the materials are. Composite woods probably do not age well, and I doubt if your inexpensive violin is made out of fine woods and other materials. It might get a little better, but I doubt it. If the instrument is good enough for you to learn how to play, that's all that counts.

I think you're thinking of "Fire On High" by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra).

The part you're thinking of (where classic rock stations always start it on the radio) is about 1.5 minutes into the song. The beginning's kinda trippy, so they skip it on air, so if you end up hearing the whole thing, listen all the way through to make sure it's the correct song.

It is not know exactly how many violins Antonius Stradivari made during his life time.......he also made violas, cellos, mandolins and one known harp, incidentally. Hi.....I use an electric violin all the time for practice........You do hear some reverb from the strings, but this is not enough to disturb anyone, unless someone is sitting right next to you, even late at night, any time, really.......Also, you can consider an acoustic with a mute, available as an accessory, and the result will be about the same...... :-)

The Devil Went Down To Georgia Lyrics

Artist(Band):The Charlie Daniels Band

(Print the Lyrics)

The devil went down to Georgia. He was lookin' for a soul to steal. He was in a bind 'cause

he was way behind, and he was willin' to make a deal, when he came across this young man

sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot. And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump and said,

"Boy, let me tell you what.

I guess you didn't know it but I'm a fiddle player, too. And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll

make a bet with you. Now, you play pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due. I'll bet

a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you." The boy said, "My

name's Johnny, and it might be a sin. But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret, 'cause I'm

the best that's ever been."

Johnny, rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard, 'cause hell's broke loose in Georgia and

the devil deals the cards. And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold. But if you lose,

the devil gets your soul.

The devil opened up his case and he said, "I'll start this show." And fire flew from his fingertips

as he rosined up his bow. And he pulled the bow across the strings and it made an evil hiss.

Then a band of demons joined in and it sounded somethin' like this:

When the devil finished, Johnny said, "Well, you're pretty good, old son, but sit down in that

chair right there and let me show you how it's done.

Fire on the mountain. Run, boys, run. The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun. Chicken in the

bread pan pickin' out dough. Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.

The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat. And he laid that golden fiddle

on the ground at Johnny's feet. Johnny said, "Devil, just come on back if you ever want to try

again. 'Cause I told you once, you son of a *****, I'm the best that's ever been."

How come antique violins cost more than newer ones made with the new technology today?

How come antique violins cost more than newer ones made with the new technology today?opera.com opera theater

Because the new technology is unable to improve the craft man skills of the ones who made the famous "Stradivarius" or "Amati" violins brands which still being insuperable due the quality of the extensive range of sounds produced
My impression is that the technology for making contemporary violins has not changed much from the traditional ways acoustic instruments have been made. Perhaps the means of heating some of the products, the lighting when the work is done, etc., has changed. But the actual making of a good instrument is still, I believe, carved by hand.

I'm not so sure about sax with a big band though. That might be a little too much.

But definitely I like a nice dose of violins.

I also like the tulips on the organ thing.

I would rather have tulips on my organ than roses on my piano. But I'll take a plain fiddle any day.

guitars , violins, and cellos are stringed instruments.

woodwinds are instruments that are blown with a persons wind or breath, but are not made of brass, but wood; such as: clarinet, oboe, etc.
No, they belong in the string section. Woodwinds are wooden instruments played with the mouth. You do not play guitars, violins, and cellos with your mouth.

P.S. It's spelled "cello", not chello.
Violins and cellos, do not belong in the woodwind section, the word wind, should give you a hint. They belong in the string section.

i'm gessing your dad is actually banging his head against the wall but starts kissing when you notice him, the fish he kisses he's prbably trying to eat them in order to get his supplement of fish oils, what with dodgy bones and all, but you keep interrupting him.
Guitars, Chellos, Violins, Violas, Mandolins, Banjos, etc are all in the Sting category. Woodwinds are Flutes, Oboes, Piccolos, etc.

Are all stradivarius violins worth a lot of money?

All true Strads are extremely valuable. But remember that a high proportion of violins have a Stradivarius label because they are made in the style of the master, not because they are made in Cremona by him. There are also forgeries made to look like an original.

Are all stradivarius violins worth a lot of money?lyric opera

Not all actual Stradivarius violins are made equal. Some are substantially better than others, but every violin constructed by Stradivarius will be worth a good amount of money.

However, not every violin labelled Stradivarius was actually constructed by Stradivarius. Most are reproductions - Stradivarius is also a type of violin as well as a maker. We're pretty sure that the location of every violin made by Stradivarius is accounted for, so the chances of you owning one without realizing it are ridiculously small. But if you really want to know what it's worth, take it to a luthier (violin maker). A local music shop can get you in touch with one so you can have your instrument appraised.

Are all stradivarius violins worth a lot of money?imax theater opera theater

I think they all are since it is believed that there are fewer than 700 genuine extant instruments, very few of which are unaccounted for, but the following certainly is.

A Stradivarius violin almost 300 years old has smashed the record for the amount paid for a musical instrument at auction, selling for $3.5m (锟?.8m).

The instrument, made in 1707, broke the previous record of $2.03m (锟?.07m) paid for a Stradivarius in 2003.

The buyer has not been revealed but Christie's in New York said he was a "benefactor and patron of the arts" who loves classical music.

It had been privately owned but was loaned to world-renowned orchestras.

The auction was tense, with gasps punctuating the bidding. A round of applause broke out when the price reached $3m (锟?.5m).

"I have to admit it took my breath away," said Kerry Keane, head of the musical instrument department for the auction house.

He said the violin is likely to be heard in performances around the world following the purchase.

Superior sound

"These violins produce a sound, a tonal quality, that is unrivalled by any other maker"

Kerry Keane, Christies

Antonio Stradivari is considered the most distinguished violin maker in the history of the instrument.

He crafted over 1,000 violins, violas and violoncellos, and was commissioned by King James II of England and King Charles III of Spain.

Stradivari's later works are said to be some of his most powerful sounding instruments and the most coveted by musicians.

"These violins produce a sound, a tonal quality, that is unrivalled by any other maker," said Mr Keane.

"When they're played you can hear it at the front of the hall, and you can hear it all the way up at the back in the cheap seats."

The instrument sold at Christie's is known as The Hammer, and is named after Christian Hammer, a 19th Century Swedish collector.

It was made during Stradivari's "golden period" of 1700-1720, and was brought to the United States in 1911.

Before the auction, Christies had valued the violin between $1.5m (锟?00,000) and $2.5m (锟?.3m).
Yes, it is a combination of craftsmanship and wood stain that have been unduplicatable even now with modern technology. So yes all of them are worth a lot of money.
yes. there are so few of them and the sound is marvellous.

What instrument should I play?????

Hi.

O.k. I have played the clarinet, and the piano. When I first played the clarinet i was in 4th grade and played it till half way through 5th grade. After that I played the piano....6-7th grade. Now I am in 8th and am torn between the violin or the guitar. One of the high schools I am looking at has a great music/art program and lets you start your own instrument, it is a private school so I don't know if I will get in....I should know in like 2or 2 1/2 weeks....cuz I have my interview this week.

Here are my questions:

~ If I get in that school (I really want to) should I start an instrument? or should I start now and continue there?

~ Should I play the guitar or the violin? (help!!)

Thank you!!!! =]

I think you should play the guitar

Even though the violin is cool I think you would have more

fun with the guitar.

What instrument should I play?????imax theatre opera theater

It's always fun to try something new, so I think you should start a new instrument.

When you are playing the violin, their really aren't very many options in terms of the style of music you will be playing. But it can be a lot of fun, because most often you will get the melodies and solos. People often think that when you play a string instrument like the violin you are all alone, but they are very wrong about that. Most of what you do in an orchestra is learning how to work with other instruments to sound good as a team. The guitar on the other hand is a very versatile instrument. You can play almost any type of music. But you are doing it all on your own. On the other hand, you can play almost any song. Hear a song on the radio you like? Get the tabs online and you can play it. That especially makes playing guitar a lot of fun.

I hope I helped!
THE DRUMS THOSE THINGS ARE SUPER DOOPER COOOOL

but out of the guitar or violin the guitar def.
Drums!! You will love the beats!!!!!! I love drums so much!!!!!
GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I played violin for 4 years, and I now play guitar, and guitar is much more fun than the violin :)

plus you can play more of a variety of music than just classical.
You kids HAVE to stop asking questions about yourselves.

Just play the one you are best at. Don't start a new one, especially not guitar, cause you wont stand out. Clarinet is a stupid instrument, I suggest you go for Piano.
well i have been playing the violin for the past 6 years. it is so easy to earn. and i really like it. so i want to say violin even though guitar is cool too
start it now, bcuz after you get into the school, you will have enough to worry about with tests and stuff, so your not gunna have tiume to start brand new on a instrument.

guitar if you want to have more fun playing

violin if you want to play in orchestra or pit.
the violin!!!!!! I have always want to play the violin!!! I was going to to but the school band does not have violin players, so I have played the Alto Sax. since I was in 5th grade and I am now in 9th grade ?
most deff guitar!!they are super amazing...i have been playing for like 3 years.
violin. it's easy and fun. and it sound nice
I think maybe Guitar. Guitar is more fun and less boring.
violin!!!!!!!!!

i think its harder.. but you'll gain more from it that will help you in learning guitar...

trust me. ite easier to teach a violinist guitar than a guitarist violin.
If you want to play an instrument, you should probably start now and continue when you get to the school. And I think that you should play the violin. I play the violin and it is very fun. You can learn it very quickly (my friend started playing it this year with people who have been playing it 3-4 years and you can hardly tell the difference). Also if you really like it and want to go far with it, you can do solos or play in an orchestra that is more classical music ish or a more rock kind of thing and play the electric violin. The violin is a fun and awesome instrument and I really suggest that you try it.
I think you should start now and i also think that you should play the guitar because i think that it's a lot more fun than the violin. but thats just me.

What musical instrument should I play?

I really want to play a musical instrument. My grandmother wants me to take piano lessons, my parents want me to take guitar, and my grandfather wants me to take violin lessons.. What should I choose? The piano? The guitar? or the Violin?

Which is best?

What musical instrument should I play?opera sheet music

The most important opinion is yours. What do you want to play? What sounds most appealing to YOU? If you aren't sure then see if you can take one lesson with each instrument to try it out before you decide. Most music stores have rent to own programs so if you don't like the instrument you can return it. The instrument that is best is the one you like the most and that "fits" you the best. You will be more successful if you play an instrument you really like. So maybe start thinking outside the box too. The possibilities are endless...oboe, bassoon, french horn, tuba, trombone, cello, viola, flute, harp, bagpipes...have fun and good luck!

What musical instrument should I play?shows opera theater

piano is wonderful to know how to play....however I don't....my parents forced me to take lessons for 4 years and it was just torture! i HATED it!! some people just aren't able to play it and i was one of them. but definitely try it because if you are someone who is able to play it well you can do soooooo many things with it!!

the violin (no offense to grandpa) in my opinion does not have a very pleasant sound.

if you don't have any luck with piano go with guitar! it's an awesome instrument.
for me i would pick the guitar.

you can play almost anything with it.

you can also bring it anywhere you go.
What do YOU want to play?

If you really don't have a preference, I'd go for piano (1st) or guitar.

If you can play piano, it really does make it that much easier to learn just about any other instrument.

If you want to play melodies (AND harmonies too), go for piano.

If you want to play mostly chords (harmony--not much melody), go for guitar. You CAN play melodies on the guitar, but it's much more common for the guitar to get mostly chords unless you're playing classical guitar.
I think that you should play the PIANO as it is quite easy to learn even if you are just a beginner.
the violin is what i would choose. i love the sound of it, but as a begginer you wont sound very good on any of them, so be prepared to work.
The piano is the most playable and most friendly of all musical instruments. Like the guitar it can perform better as solo instrument.

The violin is the hardest to play. You can only do solo in violin if you have achieved a certain high degree of training and mastery.

No one could actually tell you which instrument to choose. In my case, I have given you but a little insight.

Hope this helps!

??? ????? ?? ????? ???? ???? ????!
It's your life, it's your choice.

I would recommend the piano. If you start with piano, it is easy to pick up other instruments. If you get good with chords on the piano, you can easily pick up guitar. Also, if you play the piano, then it would be easier to pick up the violin because you would have a good knowledge of scales, notes, and intervals.

You say your parents want you to learn guitar. Which one? There is acoustic, electric, and electric bass. If you do plain old acoustic guitar, you would be playing mostly just chords. If you play the electric guitar, you would also do alot of melodies and solos in addition to chords. For the electric bass guitar, you would be playing bass lines. If you play the bass guitar, it would be then easy to pick up the string bass, and from there, you could then learn violin.

If I had to pick between the three instruments, violin would be my last pick. It is the hardest of the stringed instruments to play well. Like the clarinet, when you are still learning, it sonds TERRIBLE!!!!! Many violin students quit because it is so hard. Most of the others never get good. I don't know though, you might have a talent for it.

Basically, I think you should go to a music store or some place, and try out all three instruments. See which one you like to play the most, and which one sounds the best.
Another Great Question. First, how old are you? It doesn't really make a difference, but I'm just curious. I always recommend EVERYONE who is interested in music, to learn keyboard. Several reasons, it develops the spacial cortex, and temporal lobes a little quicker because you use both hands in a completely different manner. The more proficient you become, the more development in those areas of the brain. (Music makes you smarter.) Second, as you progress in music, you start to get a better understanding of the theoretical aspects of music (chord structure, inversions, harmony, chord progressions, etc.). You can use the keyboard to see what the teachers are talking about, and you start to understand things quicker.

Second, chose an instrument that makes you happy and you like the sound of. If you don't like the sound of the saxophone, don't chose that instrument. You will have much better success if you pick something that makes you happy. My last suggestion would be to talk to your band and/or orchestra director at school. Sometimes physical features of the lips, or hands make a difference on which instrument they would recommend you play right off the bat. Chances are, you are suitable for any instrument. I would tell you french horn because I need more of them. :) Good luck!! Let us know what you decide.

Zam.
Why not take up all three?
You could learn how to play all three! I'm learning the piano and the violin and I'm starting guitar lessons soon. It's not as hard as it seems to learn three instruments as long as you don't start them all at the same time. A good idea would be to start with the piano, then start guitar, and then start the violin - only if you want to learn these instruments, or course - you can learn whatever you want.

To the people above me who said learning the violin is really hard: That's a myth! I started the violin last year and am already in the band at my school. It's not that hard if you have a good teacher and practice.
Piano AND guitar. Piano is simple, and it will help you a TON on guitar.
No one can answer this for you, but here is some guidance. You need to ask yourself several questions first:

1) Do you want to play a solo instrument? (although all three can be, the piano tends to lend itself to more complex music solo than the others at a more elementary level)

2) Do you want to have an instrument that is mobile? (You can take a guitar with you to jam out with friends, piano - not so much - unless you want to play the keyboard which has a very different feel to it :-)

3) What kind of music do you want to play? Do you want to play classical? Rock? Blues? Jazz?

I chose to play the piano (for 16 years now) and I absolutely love it. It is a very dramatic instrument. It can be loud and emotional or soft and sweet. I love playing classical music, jazz and ragtime. The piano lends itself to many genres of music. The violin and guitar are also both beautiful instruments (I have experience with the guitar as well), they each in turn have their own benefits. So you should ask yourself these questions and pick the instrument that will most suit your personality and musical aspirations.
OK, so your granny wants you to take the piano, your folks want you to take the guitar, and your granddaddy wants you to take the violin. The solution to this is quite simple: TAKE THE BASSOON!!!!

Now, seriously, you have to decide on your own which instrument you like the most. It's not a matter of what somebody else wishes you to play.

Listen to all kinds of music, pay special attention to what each instrument does in each musical setting. From there, decide on what you like the most. It may very well happen that you choose something completely different from what your family members want you to play.

Each instrument is an immense, magical universe. Any one you chose will take a great deal of commitment, and even devotion from you, if you really want to play it well. It would be quite a pity that you invest so much of yourself into such a project, just to please somebody else.

Find out what you really want to play. Look in your mind, in your heart for what sound you like the most.
Trust your grandfather, and give the violin a try. If it doesn't work out, at least you can know that you gave it a sincere try, and have that experience.

Then you can try anything else.

Will your grandfather help you to buy a violin?
You're asking us but let me ask - which is best for YOU? You can always pursue all of them later but you need to gather theory to be able to translate sounds to different instruments. A piano is hard to lug around. With a guitar, you've got to try to keep up with all this technology. A violin is a violin. Now I play guitar, just because it speaks to me. I've been doing it so long I know what it's going to do before it does. But follow your heart. Don't go through life wishing you would have done it your way.
personally i would choose percussion.... haha

but out of those I think piano and guitar kind of go together. If you learn piano first then you know the basic note stuff, then when you pick up a guitar it all comes together.... Like I said, both go together.
Hm....I personally play violin and love it to death but it does take a while to learn. You're looking at about 6 years at least to be able to perform solo on it at recitals and such. My advise to you is to not necissarily pick what your FAMILY wants you to. I think you should pick up something YOU want to play. Piano, however, is good to learn no matter what. It helps an infinit amount of times for college if you major in music. It is also fairly easy to kinda just pick up. Anyone can learn it. It also depends on the type of music you are looking to play. Rock etc......guitar.....maybe even violin and always---piano. HOWEVER%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; there are tons of instruments! Brass (trumpet, euphonium, french horn) the last two being easy ones to pick up! You can learn them in a year and join the school band. There are also woodwinds and reeds.......I don't know much about them though. If you are looking for a string instrument.....you could always try bass (good for jazz some rock and always in classical music) or maybe viola, but the viola is kind of a sub instrument......but not many people play it and you would never have trouble getting into an orchestra because conductors ALWAYS need violas. Just keep your mind open. There are sooooo many more instruments then that. Its hard to compete on those three instruments you want to play because sooooo many people play them and you have to compete with the people that have been doing it since 3 or 4 years of age. But in music there are limitless oppurtunities! Keep looking, but if you have to pick one of those three instruments you said, I would go with piano!!! You learn bass cleff and treble cleff on it (the two most important). Best of luck and Wishes to you!
It really depends on where you want to go with your musical knowledge. If you learn piano, you'll most likely be performing alone often, or accompanying people soloing on other instruments or voice. But, you won't have to carry an instrument around!

If you learn guitar, there is the chance of playing (and singing?) by yourself, but there's also ample opportunity to play as part of a group. It could be 'a band' of some sort, and guitar can really fit into any genre you want. There would also be some chance of performing in an orchestral setting, there are a number of guitar concertos, although not many are played by youth orchestras.

If you learn violin, you will most certainly be playing in an orchestra to hone your talents. Of course, there is violen repertoire to practice and perform by yourself, but the most engaging ensemble to help a young violinist grow as a musician is in an orchestra.

They are three VERY different instruments and roles... if you commit to violin, you're committing to individual practice time and group rehearsals... possibly the same with piano, but more on your own time... and less true with guitar, but more possibilities in the genre of music.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!
